WHAT IS MERMAIDING

Mermaiding is an expression in the English language that can be translated as "acting like a mermaid". Mermaiding can therefore be defined as the aquatic discipline that reproduces the swimming of mermaids, the mythological figures who are half woman and half fish. In Mermaiding, thanks to the use of a sheath that encloses the body from the hips to the feet and ending with a monofin, you swim with fluid movements of the pelvis, using both legs as a caudal fin. The monofin, into which the feet are inserted, is made of flexible plastic and is covered with a soft and resistant fabric that allows fast and dynamic underwater movements with each fin; the entire lower muscular and skeletal chain is activated, giving power to the push without any back effort. Using your arms, you can perform unique series of hydrodynamic and elegant swimming activities, rotations and underwater pirouettes. Mermaiding is a complete discipline which, if practiced with consistency and dedication, offers a high degree of physical, emotional and mental harmonisation, an increase in awareness and self-esteem, the fluidity and elegance of movements even outside of water, the opportunity to free yourself from blocks and fears. For many it can become a lifestyle, an artistic expression of the body and mind, the opportunity to live the dream by transforming into a mermaid or a merman, mythical beings capable of living in harmony with themselves and in symbiosis with nature. the environment in which you are immersed.

THE MERMAIDING TECHNIQUE:

Mermaiding kicking has its basis in fin swimming. The technical gesture of fin swimming is achieved thanks to the propulsive movement of the lower limbs, which perform a simultaneous and symmetrical action similar to the dolphin. The resistance that the water opposes to the blade of the monofin slows down the movement and makes it more harmonious and more similar to that of the caudal fin of dolphins. The strength of the lower limbs, with the monofin, is transformed into propulsion, the hands will be overlapped to form the vertex of a triangle, whose base is given by the shoulders. The head is bent forward, blocked by the upper limbs extended to the maximum. The thrust obtainable with the monofin combined with the assumption of the best hydrodynamic position allow you to reach very high speeds. The movement, although starting from the lower limbs, influences the whole body; the spinal column carries out a degrading wave movement, acquiring particular qualities of joint mobility The floating kick is what you do when you are under the surface of the water. The thrusting power is realized when the fin blade descends downwards. During this action it is best that hands and arms remain still or adhere to the body, since they must not be used as a pushing tool, as they would not make a significant contribution to propulsion, indeed, they would only represent a useless waste of energy. In surface swimming, however, the body is on the surface of the water and the fin is completely submerged, as it would lose its propulsive effectiveness if it were exposed to the air. Swimming with a monofin involves a greater quantity of muscle mass and larger dimensions both on the surface and underwater and, once the technique has been learned, allows movement with less resistance in the water and good speed.

THE BENEFITS: The regular practice of Mermaiding leads to the strengthening of the dorsal and lumbosacral muscles, gives toned lower limbs and buttocks, harmonious movements and the prolongation of the apnea phases: Mermaiding, once the basic techniques have been learned, is a predominantly underwater discipline which involves phases of apnea interspersed with short ascents to the surface. Mermaiding is a complete discipline, which if practiced with consistency and dedication gives a high degree of physical, emotional and mental harmonization, an increase in awareness and self-esteem, the fluidity and elegance of movements even outside of the water , the opportunity to free yourself from blocks and fears. For many it can become a lifestyle, an artistic expression of the body and mind, the opportunity to live the dream by transforming into a mermaid or a merman, mythical beings capable of living in harmony with themselves and in symbiosis with nature. the environment in which you are immersed. Swimming underwater, in the absence of external noises, immersed, cradled and caressed by the water, listening to your own breathing and heartbeat, surrounded by marine flora and fauna, you reconnect with yourself while respecting your nature. This is the great gift that comes from the practice of Mermaiding. Finally, Mermaiding is suitable for everyone and all ages. It is naturally necessary to have a bit of aquatic skills and the desire to experience the sea with respect and love.
