EGADI ISLANDS and WESTERN SICILY
FAVIGNANA
Sailing holidaysto the Egadi Islands

The island of Favignana, "The butterfly of the Egadi", the capital and largest island of the Egadi archipelago is defined as a butterfly (with wings spread) due to its peculiar shape divided into two parts by the hill of Santa Caterina. Called Aegusa by the Greeks, it owes its current name to the Favonian wind, which always laps it, making its climate mild and cool.
Bays, sandy or rocky beaches, the beaches with fine golden sand are Cala Azzurra, Lido Burrone, the Calamoni, then there are also suggestive sandy and pebble coves located in the areas of Punta Lunga, Preveto, Faraglioni and Punta Slim.
Cala Rossa takes its name mythically, like many places in our Sicily, from terrible and sad facts as if to reiterate that even in the worst situation we always manage to make the best of it.
Here in 241 BC on March 10th, a terrible naval battle took place, so many were the victims that the entire golf course was colored blood red.

Sailing holidaysto the Egadi Islands
Marettimo, the westernmost of the Egadi islands, is about 20 miles from Trapani. It has a surface area of 12.3 km2 and reaches its highest peak with Monte Falcone at 686 m above sea level. As well as being the furthest from Sicily, it is also the wildest and most uncontaminated. It has just 680 inhabitants.
Its name of Greek origin Hierà Nésos means "sacred island". What we know it by today, however, derives from the Latin Maritima, probably due to the abundant presence of wild thyme on the island.
Sea, beaches, uncontaminated nature and… much more! Discover with us the wonders of this island in the Egadi archipelago.
The island of Marettimo was inhabited for the first time probably around 5,000 BC. Several artefacts found on the island and preserved today in the maritime museum testify to this. These are mostly arrowheads and obsidian splinters.
Dating back to 800 BC. instead there are many remains discovered in the karst cave located above the Pipa sea cave. Marettimo was probably a resting place for those crossing the Mediterranean and who found shelter and supplies here.
For Marettimo, however, the official entry into the history books is dated 20 March 241 BC, with the battle that ended the First Punic War. That day, the Carthaginian fleet was defeated by the Romans and the armistice was signed.
From that moment on, the Romans made the island a military garrison to control the route between Tunisia and Rome. What remains of this historical period are the "Roman Houses", a monumental complex located in the upper part of the island, near the beautiful Norman church, built by the Basilian monks in this very place to be able to use the remains of the Roman building as a monastery .

SAN VITO LO CAPO
San Vito lo Capo Sailing Boat Tour
An obligatory stop during a holiday in western Sicily is San Vito Lo Capo, a lovely town nestled between the iconic promontory of Monte Monaco on one side and the rocky Piana dell'Egitarso on the other.
Nature is undoubtedly one of the most attractive elements of the area but also the man-made buildings, such as the ancient tuna fishery, the Moorish chapel or the romantic Bourbon lighthouse, will fascinate you with their suggestions of distant times and a deep bond between man and the sea. Another famous tourist attraction of San Vito Lo Capo is more convivial in nature: its succulent couscous, to be tasted in a typical restaurant, perhaps by the sea, or during the Cous Cous Fest which takes place every year in September .
The city beach of San Vito Lo Capo is a fine sandy beach about 3 km long and quite wide, in a splendid position at the foot of Monte Monaco. Immersed in a landscape of rare beauty, this beach can be easily reached from the historic center of the town with a walk of about 10 minutes: here you will find free areas interspersed with equipped areas equipped with all essential services such as bathrooms and showers, rental of umbrellas and deckchairs, bars and restaurants. Due to its gently sloping waters and the almost total absence of currents, it is a beach suitable for inexperienced swimmers and families with children, but also for expert swimmers and divers, who will be able to enjoy wonderful seabeds by going offshore.
TONNARA AND FARAGLIONI OF SCOPELLO
Boat excursion at Tonnara di Scopello
The Tonnara di Scopello, nestled between cliffs and prickly pears, is a true museum facing the sea: it tells the story of tuna fishing, an activity that is part of the Sicilian tradition and fundamental for the economy of the island.
In this community the rais is the most important figure, he organizes the activity, decides how to position the nets and is in command of the fishermen, called tonnarotti.
The Tonnara di Scopello dates back to 1200 and is one of the oldest in Sicily. The activity continued until 1984 and every year, on average, around 500 tuna were caught.
Originally the tuna fishery was smaller: it consisted of the building perched on the cliff and the nearby tower that protected the village from enemy attacks.
Over time it has been expanded several times, the warehouses for storing tools, the fishermen's accommodation, the rais' house, the salt warehouse (necessary for preserving the catch), the carpentry shop, the kitchens and the lodge for tuna processing.
The stacks stand out proudly and are covered in dense vegetation, characterizing the entire surrounding landscape. A swim with a mask is a must. The seabed rich in fish and the crystal clear water will give you magical moments.
