Weekend San Vito Lo Capo - Zingaro - Macari

SICILY WEST COAST SAILING WEEKEND

The origins of San Vito Lo Capo are linked to an ancient legend which tells of the vicissitudes of a young Roman patrician, son of a high official of ancient Rome.

One day the young man, to escape the persecutions of Diocletian, decides to flee from Mazzara, his hometown.
After a few days of sailing north, a storm forced Vito's ship to land in a gulf protected from the wind by a rocky cape well known by sailors of the time (Egitarso or Egitallo its name) and here the three would have tried to convert the inhabitants of the Conturrana village, which stood about three kilometers from the sea, under a high rock.
Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia failed to convert the villagers to their faith, and indeed they were chased away and threatened by them.
It was then that, as a divine punishment, a huge landslide came to bury the village and its inhabitants.

Thus the town was born, but many decades still had to pass before San Vito Lo Capo and its districts became inhabited centers in the true sense of the word.
Today the hamlets of Macari and Castelluzzo are part of the same municipality, immersed in the green Sicilian countryside and very close to one of the most beautiful stretches of the Trapani coast.

ZINGARO RESERVE

In the stretch of coast from San Vito Lo Capo to Castellammare del Golfo, 7 kilometers of uncontaminated nature: the Zingaro Nature Reserve, one of the most famous in Italy;
The ancient Greeks and the Latins called it Cetaria due to the abundance of tuna fish found in its waters.

The first beach you come across when entering from the north side is the largest in the Zingaro Nature Reserve and also the busiest in summer. The Tonnarella dell'Uzzo, to follow: Cala Torre dell'Uzzo, Cala Marinella, Cala Beretta, Cala della Disa, Cala del Varo and Cala della Capreria, very close to Scopello.

The Tonnara di Scopello, with its Faraglioni, is the main attraction of the coast, especially at sunset!

Admiring the Zingaro Reserve from the sea is an exciting experience because it allows you to grasp the majesty of the place with a single glance. The high peaks of the Zingaro slope down to the sea, the green of the Mediterranean maquis mixes with the red of the rocks and plunges into the blue of its splendid waters.
